About the site & collector
This is my webpage dedicated entirely to my collection of Furbys, and as a way to showcase my love for them! The website is pretty small right now and still very much a work in progress, but I hope to grow it more over time as I discover more about the Furby world, just to match the amount of love I have for them!
I've only been into them since 2016, as I regretably never grew up with them (I was too young to remember or collect the original 90's Furbies, and the 05's never interested me as much as Furreal Friends did,) but when I discovered the growing community surrounding them, I instantly became interested and wanted to learn as much about them as possible. I started my collection sometime in late 2016, and would take a break between 2018 to 2020, but I eventually got back into them in 2021 when I started becoming interested in the robotics that make the Furby into what it is, as well as developing an interest in customizing them to be unique pieces of art. I've been super into collecting them since then, I hope to grow my collection to be bigger, and even collect things that aren't the Furbys themselves!
--Why Furbies?
I mean, what's not to love? They're adorable little things that exist to make us happy and feel a sense of companionship, which makes them very therapeutic (there's a reason why the 2021 Furby Demographic Survery by Furbystein showed a significant amount of developmentally and mentally disabled participants who are part of the community!) I think their uncanny oddball nature also really connects with me on a very personal level, as a gay and multiply disabled person who has been seen as being "off-putting" by other people for these identity traits. While I love to collect all different kinds of toys for different reasons, I find myself feeling a type of kinship with my Furbys that I don't feel with any of my other toy collections, and I think this feeling is what has kept me captivated by them for so long.
I also highly recommend giving this article by Siobhan Ball a read, you won't regret it.
--But aren't Furbys creepy/cursed/haunted?
Truth be told, Furbys were just really ahead of their time when they first came out, being able to simulate things like learning a new language overtime and recognizing sounds and lights in it's environment. While they do have strange quirks in their programming that can easily scare those who aren't aware of how they work, many of the things people call Furbys "haunted" for are things that naturally occur in any electronic toy, especially ones that were made 25 years ago. Plus, I find that people really love to lie or exaggerate about things like Furbys to back up their irrational fears- who cares about working through and facing your fears when you can make up things online to push a certain narrative for clout! Now where have I heard that one before...
All in all, I get why people find some iterations of the Furby to be uncanny when their aim was to be as realistic as possible with the limited technology they had at the time, but I personally get a lot of joy out of their presence, and I'm not going to let the opinions of close-minded people change my mind for me! I love my Furbys, and I hope that, through this website, I can make you see that Furbys aren't here to hurt us and just want to be our friends!
